Morningstar Canada is Canada's leading investment fund research firm. It markets the two most popular mutual fund software products, PALTrak and BellCharts, and operates the Morningstar.ca web site. In addition, Morningstar Canada provides analysis and consulting services for investment management, fund performance evaluation and pension plan governance.

Founded in 1988 as Portfolio Analytics Ltd., Toronto-based Morningstar Canada employs approximately 90 people. Morningstar Canada is the result of the acquisition in late 1999 of Portfolio Analytics and BellCharts Inc. by Chicago-based Morningstar Inc., the global investment firm in the United States. Morningstar Canada subsequently acquired BellCharts Inc. of Toronto. Founded in 1991, BellCharts Inc. has been an innovative leader in providing professional advisors, investors, and institutions with performance and holdings information on Canadian mutual funds. BellCharts revolutionized the presentation of comparative mutual fund performance through the use of floating bar charts for both compound and annual returns.

These activities have resulted in Morningstar Canada concentrating its resources on financial data collection and organization, state-of-the-art computer technology and mathematical models on investment and investment performance.

Software developed by Morningstar Canada is in use throughout the world for analysis of investment manager performance. PALTrak and Advisor Workstation are Canada's leading mutual funds analysis software. Articles, commentaries and analytical reports are designed to keep neophyte and veteran investors alike up to date on the latest trends and issues affecting the retail markets. The site's core strength lies in its ability to draw upon the combined power of the PALTrak and Advisor Workstation databases. The integrity of Morningstar Canada's database made it the natural platform for the Morningstar Five Star Rating system , the benchmark of mutual fund comparison.
